Mirror, Mirror on the wall …

Yesterday I found the funniest yet profound and professional tutorial on organizing your closet (and much more), that I am pretty excited to share the news with you!

If you want to know the #1 Secret to Organizing your Closet, watch this video (don’t blame me if some parts remind you of the famous Muppet’s Show … Applause Applause Applause!)

Two professional organizers, Kim Eagles and Elaine Shannon, share their secrets on organizing your wardrobe and your bedroom in a brand new course “From Cluttered Nightmares to Sweet Dreams – Organizing the Bedroom“.

Delivered online, the course package contains an ebook, multiple checklists and an instructional video (very entertaining too). Early Birds get some bonuses as well!

These two ladies know how to motivate bedroom messies to become real life organizers, I can assure you. Both love their job and teach in a cheery manner that I’d like to see way more often online.

Kim and Elaine share their Six Step Organizing System with you, explaining every step in detail. Accompanied by the checklists, organizing your clothes becomes easier and easier as you go through the steps.

After watching the video, I immediately began to tidy up the bedroom. There’s still some work waiting for me, but I know the direction where to go. Actually, I am not THAT disorganized but I love the kick to get started.

If you tend to get disorganized at home, feel uncomfortable in your bedroom or don’t find your clothes in your wardrobe anymore, this course is for you. If you have teenage kids who need some friendly lessons in bedroom organizing, this course is for you! If you need help in deciding which unworn clothes to keep and which to give away, this course is definetely for you too!

So, what are you waiting for? Create the Bedroom of your Dreams, now!

Back to School: 15 Essential Web Tools for Students

Stay Organized

The first thing you need to do in order to have a successful school year, is develop a plan to stay organized. If you’re constantly missing due dates or losing track of your notes, you’ll find yourself in a deep hole rather quickly. The following web applications can help you get organized and stay organized.

1. EvernoteEvernote

– Evernote is one of the best note taking applications available, allowing you to sync notes between the web, your phone, and any computer. With Evernote you can save text, audio, and images (like screenshots, entire webpages, or photos taken with your camera phone), and everything — even the images — is searchable, so you’ll never lose track of your notes. One of the ways Evernote really excels is in the number of different methods you can use to add notes to the application, which include via the web, mobile apps, email, or even TwitterTwitter

.

2. Notely – Notely is a complete, end-to-end solution for taking notes and staying organized. With a course and assignment calendar, note-taking tools, and to-do list, Notely can keep you on top of your schoolwork and assure that you never miss a due date.

3. GradeMate – GradeMate is a free online organizer made with students in mind. With it you can create to-do lists, manage due dates, keep track of grades, and even collaborate with fellow students.

4. Backpack – Initially designed for business users, Backpack is also a great way for students to keep research organized. Backpack is sort of like a single page wiki that lets you keep files, images, notes, and to-do lists in a single place and share them with fellow students (which is great for collaborative projects).

Study Better

studyrails

When you sit down to study, you want to arm yourself with the best web tools available to make sure you get the most of your study time. By utilizing the tools listed in this section, you can get more done, and do it more quickly, so that you can have more time for fun and still be prepared for that upcoming test or paper.

5. StudyRails – StudyRails is perfect for those who have trouble blocking out distractions when it comes time to study. The site lets users schedule study time and alerts them (by text message) when it is time to drop everything and hit the books. But where StudyRails really becomes important for chronic procrastinators is that it can be set to block out your favorite web sites and computer applications during scheduled study time. That way you won’t be tempted by Twitter or World of Warcraft when you’ve set aside some time specifically to write a paper.

6. DiigoDiigo

– When you’re reading books for class, you probably use a highlighter and sticky notes to mark off the passages that are of particular note to what you’re studying. But what do you do on the web? Diigo is a web-based highlighter and sticky note system that lets you annotate your web research. You can also share your work with classmates.

7. DeliciousDelicious

– Delicious is the quintessential bookmarking application on the Internet. If all you want to do is collect all the web resources you’re using for a class, project, or paper under a single tag, Delicious is one of the best and easiest to use tools you can utilize.

8. Mindmeister – There is a slight learning curve involved, but once you get use to them, one of the best ways to organize your thoughts and research is through mind maps. And one of the best online mind mapping tools is Mindmeister, which lets you both easily create mind maps, and also collaborate on them with your classmates. They offer special discounted academic pricing for students.

Work and Collaborate

google-docs

Web-based and social tools can also help you to actually get your work done and collaborate with others in your class on group projects. From word processing to presentations, the apps in this category will help you turn in complete and polished work.

9. Google DocsGoogle Docs

– Google Docs is one of the best online word processing and spreadsheets applications available, and it offers great collaboration features that allow you to work together on group assignments. In fact, we use it often here at MashableMashable

to keep track of who is working on what and collaborate on posts and projects. The two main advantages of using Google Docs over more feature-rich applications like Microsoft Word (which is also a great application that I use on a daily basis) is that GoogleGoogle

offering is free and, more importantly, you can access your files from anywhere. Also check out Adobe’s Buzzword.

10. EtherPadEtherPad

– EtherPad takes collaborating on written documents to a completely new level by allowing a group of people to edit a document at the same time and actually see what everyone else is writing as they write it. When used by multiple people meeting in person or combined with a VoIP app like SkypeSkype, EtherPad can be an amazing collaboration tool for group studying or hashing out who is doing what on a group project.

How to (Nicely) Store Stuff Under the Bed

cardboard underbed storage box, floral

Sure, you can get basic plastic storage bins that will fit under your bed. But what are your other choices? Let’s look at some, in order of height. The cardboard box above is only 5″ tall, and it’s inexpensive.

underbed storage box

This under-bed storage box from Crate & Barrel is made from cotton, combined with polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. It’s 6.3″ tall.

underbed storage box

Caraselle provides this under-bed storage box; it’s 17 cm (6.7″) tall.

pink under-bed box

And then there are the canvas boxes from PB Teen, in a range of sizes and colors (stereotyped as for girls and guys). The under-bed box is 7″ tall.

The wonderful John Trosko of OrganizingLA made me aware of these under-bed storage boxes – 7″ tall without the casters, 9″ tall with them.

underbed storage trunk

Here’s the expensive one of the bunch: an under-bed leather storage trunk, 24 cm tall (9.45″), from The Holding Company. The same company has underbed boxes for much less money.

underbed storage basket

Lombok has two different under-bed storage baskets; both this one and the other one are 24.5 cm (9.65″)tall.

wood underbed storage boxes

These open-top solid wood under-bed storage boxes can be customized; the word “toys” can be replaced with a child’s name (or, I imagine, anything else you wish, as space allows).

Wardrobe Organizer Software and Online Tools

Surfing the web for more inspiration about wardrobe organizers, I found a bunch of software and online applications I would like to show you. I admit that I didn’t try any of them, because I am still in the process of collecting information about clothes organizer software and online tools. So your feedback about these apps is highly appreciated!

Dressassistant is a software for both Win and Mac, only 8.8 MB in size as download and offered as shareware. This means, you can use Dressassistant with 20 pieces of clothing, but without expiration date. If you like it and want to enter more than 20 clothes, you need to buy the full version which costs 20 bucks. Creditcards and Paypal paying methods are available.

Closet Couture is an online wardrobe organizer with a very stylish website. You can upload pictures of your clothes, combine and rate them, buy new items and share whatever with other members. All in all it’s a social utility. Membership is free. Here is some text from the Closet Couture “About us” page:

“Closet Couture is a social and fashion utility that connects people of stylish minds with those who live or work around them. CC users manage their wardrobes online, define and refine their personal style, get help if needed, upload unlimited photos, share links and videos, and create their own style cabinet made up of the best and the brightest.”

If you wonder why I didn’t mention Closet Assistant (this is quite popular online wardrobe organizer service): I found several links and reviews about it, but the website itself didn’t work. So I haven’t an idea if Closet Assistant is still active. A review by Kristen Nicole about Closet Assistant can be found on Mashable.com.

Do you think of buying an iPhone? Maybe you need one now, because out there are some sweet iPhone apps to organize your wardrobe, too. Take a look at Touchcloset and Pocket Closet. You will find some more iPhone apps for closet organization in the lifestyle section of the iPhone Apps section of the iTunes store.

To me it seems practicable to use a handheld app on a Palm or iPhone (or something similar), especially when you are able to take pictures with the same device and add it directly into the application.

What do you use? What did you try? Why did you drop it? Which application succeeded? The comment section is yours …

Are you ready to organize your shoes?

With just five easy steps you can begin to organize your shoes!

Prerna Malik explains what it needs to get the shoes done :-)
In short, she recommends the following:
  1. Collect and Sort Shoes
  2. Categorize Shoes
  3. Decide on a Shoe Storage System
  4. Use Shoe Organizers
  5. Store and Maintain
Well, that’s it!
I think the most important recommendation is step number 3, deciding on a Shoe Storage System. Once you’ve decided to use a system, keep using it. Tweak it to the best, but stay with it. Otherwise you won’t trust your system and it will fail.
So, now move over to Prerna Malik’s article and read it in full length. Enjoy!
